Looking for things to do? Take an hour’s drive to Boyce Thompson Arboretum

Boyce Thompson Arboretum, created from 1923 to 1929, is a museum of living plants to instill an appreciate of plant life, which lies along Queen Creek, a desert stream that winds through a picturesque canyon and is nestled at the base of the 4400-foot-high Picketpost Mountain.

Just an hour from Phoenix, Boyce Thompson Arboretum is consistently voted “Best Day Trip” in polls of residents from both Phoenix and neighbor to the south, Tucson. Spring wildflowers are at their peak, so it’s a perfect time to visit the Arboretum.

The Arboretum is located at Highway 60 within close proximity to the historic copper mining town of Superior, on the Superstition Freeway.

The historic Smith Building, erected in 1925, houses an Interpretive Center with changing museum shows and displays. Two greenhouses adjacent to the Smith Building showcase cacti and succulent plants. However, the main attraction at the Arboretum is the many nature trails, with over two miles of combined length that weave through the lush botanical gardens. Ramadas are located along the Main Loop Trail to provide easily accessible information and details to Arboretum visitors.

A shaded picnic area, adjacent to Queen Creek, is a quiet, cool and serene locale for breakfast, lunch or an early dinner, under towering Sycamore trees, amid lush plants and flowering cacti.

The Arizona Arboretum offers a series of public events each year, most of them included with daily admission.
