Looking for fun, free things to do? Visit Tempe’s University Art Museum
The Arizona State University Art Museum showcases contemporary art, new media, ceramics, prints, art from the Southwest, and art of the Americas. It’s located on the main campus of ASU, in Tempe, which is about 5 minutes from Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix.
There are many fun things to do in Tempe, in addition to visiting the museum…hip restaurants—many with ethnic origins, eclectic clothing boutiques, contemporary home design stores, coffee shops, and more. A hands-down favorite restaurant of Tempe residents and students is House of Tricks. Sit on the patio for a drink or sit inside in the intimate, charming setting. Tempe is a fun college town, so visitors find diverse retail and restaurants, marketed to a young, vibrant crowd.
With five galleries, the museum building is spacious and contemporary. While the ASU Art Museum’s collections are rich in ceramics and prints, Southwestern art and Latino art are prevalent in the museum’s large collection.
The Ceramics Research Center is in a separate, relatively new building, directly across the street from the ASU Art Museum. While some people view ceramics as simply a craft, ASU Art Museum created this space to feature and allow for the study of ceramics as art and those artists making significant contributions in the ceramics field.
