South Mountain Park, in Phoenix, is designated by the city as part of the Phoenix Mountains Preserve. There are four fun activities that you and your family can enjoy at South Mountain Park:

Set out for a great hiking or go mountain biking

South Mountain has 58 miles of beautiful trails in Phoenix. Many residents enjoy this recreational area all year long. Each hiking trail is rated, so beginners and advanced hikers can choose a course that suits their needs. A good beginner’s hike is Javelina Canyon Trail which starts at Beverly Canyon parking lot (at 46th Street, south of Baseline Road). If you get lucky, you might see some desert critters and wildlife. As a precaution, always bring water, wear comfortable hiking shoes, a broad-brimmed hat, and sunscreen.

South Mountain Park is an ideal locale to bring out your inner cowboy or cowgirl. Guided horseback rides among meandering trails are available to visitors of all levels and experience.   • From I-17 going south, exit 7th Ave./Central Ave. Stay on Frontage Road to Central, turn right to go south.
  • From I-10 going east, exit 7th Ave. Go south to Baseline Road, east on Baseline to Central Ave., turn right to go south on Central Ave.
  • From I-10 going west, exit Baseline Road, turn left, go to Central Ave. and turn left (south).
