Petsmart Walk-a-thonPet owners, sponsors and friends of pets will be gathering in Tempe, Arizona for the annual PetSmart Charities PetWalk and Adoption Event. Scheduled for February, 20, 2011 at the Tempe Town Lake at 620 North Mill Avenue, the event is designed to raise awareness and money for local animal-welfare agencies.

There are an estimated 100,000 cats and dogs that enter shelters every year in Arizona. Only about half of the animals are adopted. That means almost 50,000 animals are euthanized each year. Sponsored by Purina Pro Plan, the festival will feature a pet adoption center, 5K and 1-mile walks (for you and your pet) and other activities to support the cause. Events and registration starts at 9 am.

How can you contribute to the event? Connect with other friends of pets by joining an existing team, starting a new team or registering as an individual. Preregister online or register on the day of the event. There are pet friendly accommodations in Tempe, so bringing your four-legged friend to town shouldn’t be a problem.

You can also register as a PetSmart Charities PetWalk and Adoption volunteer. Assist with paw printing or other fun activities and stations alongside friends of pets. Organizers try to match you up with your first station choice.

If you can’t make it to Tempe, feel free to make a donation. You can sponsor an individual or team or make a general donation. All proceeds benefit PetSmart Charities and local animal-welfare agencies who are friends of pets.
