Fun in Phoenix Off the Beaten Path

You can have a lot of fun in Phoenix, but your travel resources – guidebooks, for example – won’t give you the full rundown. If you want to make your Phoenix vacation memorable, why not try something unique and interesting? Here are a few great off-the-beaten-path activities:

Sonoran DesertTour the Sonoran Desert in a Tomcar. The Tomcar is a special off-road buggy developed by the Israeli military, and it’s the perfect way to see all the splendor of the Sonoran desert in a few hours. It’s also very fun. There are a handful of Tomcar tours available in the Phoenix and Scottsdale area, so find the one that looks best to you. After just a few minutes of instruction, you’ll be running wild in the desert on a very cool machine.

Play Golf at the Kokopelli. The Kokopelli might not be the most famous Phoenix golf course, but that’s what makes it so good. Little press means low prices, and for $20 you can play a full round on one of the prettiest greens in the desert.

Visit the Mystery Castle. After learning that he had tuberculosis in 1930, Boyce Gulley moved from Washington to Phoenix and began building a house for his infant daughter out of anything he could find. It took him 15 years, but he ultimately constructed a sprawling 15-room fairytale castle out of train tracks, cement, automobile parts, telephone poles and everything else you can possibly imagine. Today, the house is open to the public and is listed as one of Phoenix’s “Points of Pride.”

See The Hall of Flame Museum. The Hall of Flame museum is one of the oldest firefighting museums in the United States. Here you’ll find items and memorabilia from as far back as the year 1700 – everything from old fire helmets to antique fire trucks. One of the most interesting exhibits will teach you how firefighters work to contain and extinguish wildland fires. There’s no other exhibit quite like it in America.
