When it comes to Scottsdale attractions, you’ll be hard-pressed to find one as interestingly offbeat as the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SmoCA). If you’re looking for a stuffy museum filled with restored paintings that smell vaguely of dust and mold, just walk right on by. But if you’re love boundary-pushing projects from emerging local and national artists, then the Museum of Contemporary Art, one of the top draws in the city of Scottsdale, invites you to come on in. Here are just a few reasons to visit.

Contemporary ArtThe Art: SMoCA features a wide array of exhibitions that include photography, canvas work, weavings and even art that incorporates video and emerging technology. The current exhibit entitled “Economy of Means” uses contemporary minimalist sculpture to highlight the overlooked ways in which our physical world allows us to bond with the rest of humanity. New works are constantly being brought in, so each visit to SMoCA is a completely unique experience.

The Architecture: What once was a movie megaplex has been transformed into a work of art itself. The building’s distinctive design includes walls of galvanized steel and a soothing elliptical “skyspace” where visitors can bask in the ever-shifting light of the Arizona sky. Even if the art were to be removed, the space itself would be worth the price of admission.

The Tours: Knowledgeable guides walk visitors through each featured exhibit every Thursday and Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. These tours are free with a regular $7 paid admission. Guided outdoor sculpture walks are also available through SMoCA on the first Sunday of each month. These walks through the sculptures of the beautiful Civic Center Mall Park are free and begin at 3 p.m.

Culture is everywhere in the city of Scottsdale. This month, visit SMoCA and allow your mind wander into those creative spaces that are often difficult to access in a world that constantly bombards us with emails, texts and breaking news. As far as Scottsdale attractions go, this is one of the hippest and most refreshing. Plan a visit today.
